Worth Knowing
Joss Jaffe is a Los Angeles-based musician, vocalist, and workshop leader whose practice sits at the intersection of devotional music and sound design for yoga and meditation. Born in Santa Barbara in 1980, Jaffe has built a quiet reputation over decades by creating albums—including Meditation Music, Dub Mantra, and Sun Mountain Sea—that function as both aesthetic objects and functional tools for practitioners. His breakthrough, Meditation Music, reached the Billboard new age top 10, signaling serious critical attention in a genre often dismissed as background filler. What distinguishes Jaffe among meditation music makers is his refusal to stick to a single lane: he plays tabla, guitar, harmonium, and produces tracks spanning reggae, world music, and brain-wave-entraining ambient soundscapes. Listeners return to his work because it's composed with the precision of someone who understands both the technical demands of yoga and meditation spaces and the artistic integrity required to sustain deeper listening. His collaborations with Grammy-nominated artists like Jim "Kimo" West and Jai Uttal underscore that serious musicians take his work seriously.
