Hamakua Sanctuary — Honokaa, United States
A nine-acre nonprofit retreat sanctuary on Hawaiʻi's Hāmākua Coast, Honokaa
Coffee comes before anyone else is awake. Laundry moves on the line, the dishes after dinner are done together, and a duck keeps its own hours. That is how Hamakua Sanctuary describes an ordinary day on nine acres at the wild edge of Hawaiʻi's Hāmākua Coast, near Honokaa, where the land is misty, green and still growing on its own.
The premise is stated plainly: people come alive again when the conditions are right. Safety. Rest. Food. Community. Hands in the land. The sanctuary tends those conditions and the land does the rest. At the heart of each Journey is therapeutic horticulture, guided mornings of planting, tending and harvesting together. The current Journeys are small: five days for four women, and eight days for four men. They are held by Ryan, who has spent twelve years in energy work and facilitation.
Guests sleep in the Heart House, in the Heart, Harmony and Heavenly rooms. Harmony keeps its 1970s dark hardwood paneling, and Heavenly has diamond-shaped windows for stargazing. The Loft is a private two-story space with a screened balcony over the rainforest. There are indoor and outdoor kitchens, an outdoor shower, and The Source, a secluded room for meditation and yoga. Guided meditation, massage and Reiki, and qi-gong and nature therapy classes are among the offerings.
Hamakua is a nonprofit, and much of what it generates is reinvested in the land and its long-term stewardship. Gardens, compost and biochar are part of the daily rhythm. Some guests stay briefly and others return again and again. The pages say the people change while the rhythm remains.
