Qigong Energy Practice: How toShift Liquid With Chi

This video demonstrates a Qigong energy practice where a master uses hand placement, intention, and specific finger techniques to shift the energetic properties of a liquid. By placing hands above and below a glass, channeling chi into the substance, and sealing the work with sword finger and yin-yang diagrams, the practice aims to sweeten and soften the liquid's quality while removing harshness. The demonstration reveals core Qigong principles: chi responds to intention, energy can be projected through the hands, and specific gestures carry precise energetic functions.

What is the Basic Hand Placement for This Energy Practice?

The practice begins with deliberate hand positioning. One hand covers the top of the glass while the other supports underneath, creating a sandwich around the liquid. This bilateral contact establishes what Peng calls a "chi circuit"—the hands are not merely touching but actively creating an energetic container around the substance.

The upper hand is primary for introducing intention and positive energy into the liquid. Peng instructs practitioners to imagine this hand "putting the Chi there," essentially visualizing energy streaming from the palm into the brandy. This is not metaphorical in the Qigong framework; the hand is understood as a chi-emitting organ capable of directing healing intention. The lower hand maintains grounding and balance, preventing the energy from dispersing randomly downward.

How Does Intention Shape the Energetic Quality of Liquids?

Central to this practice is the principle that chi follows thought. When the upper hand projects chi, practitioners simultaneously hold a specific intention: making the liquid "sweeter and softer." Peng emphasizes this by guiding students to imagine "all your good wishes" flowing into the brandy "like a tap feeling the beautiful water or the good wishes in the brandy."

Simultaneously, the practitioner visualizes removal of unwanted qualities. As positive chi is introduced from above, the practitioner imagines "all the harshness of the brandy is flushing away from the bottom out." This dual-action visualization—adding sweetness while expelling harshness—is fundamental to Qigong transformation work. The practice operates on the principle that matter and energy are not separate; the chi carries the intention, and the substance absorbs and reflects that energetic instruction.

Peng instructs that this can be "imposing this way up and down to make it stronger," suggesting that repeated cycles of chi introduction amplify the effect. The motion itself becomes part of the encoding process.

What Role Does the Sword Finger Play in Energy Work?

After establishing the basic chi flow with open hands, the practice advances to the sword finger—a specific hand configuration used throughout Qigong and martial traditions. In this context, all fingers are extended and aligned to create a "beam" of concentrated chi. Peng describes the sword finger as generating "beams from all the fingers of the beams is stirring the brandy to mix with all the goodness in there and to vapor 8 all the harshness of the brandy out."

The sword finger serves two functions here: first, as a stirring tool that mixes the positive chi throughout the entire liquid, dispersing the beneficial intention evenly; second, as an evaporative tool that actively dissolves and removes the unwanted harsh qualities. The finger is not merely making a gesture—it is directing concentrated chi in a specific pattern designed to integrate the new energetic quality while eliminating the old.

How Does Sealing Work to Preserve the Energy Transformation?

Once the transformation is complete, Peng introduces a critical step: sealing. Without sealing, the newly imparted chi would begin to disperse, and the liquid would revert toward its original state. Sealing is the mechanism that anchors the transformation.

The seal uses the sword finger again, but now with an additional component: an "in young diagram" (yin-yang diagram) inscribed at the end of the blade. When the sword finger presses onto the surface of the brandy, this yin-yang seal is imprinted there. Peng then performs nine precise pressings—"one two three four five six seven eight and nine evenly evenly on the surface of the Brandi." Each press is distinct, and the nine repetitions create a stable energetic boundary that locks the transformation in place.

The yin-yang diagram itself carries meaning: it represents balance, the dynamic equilibrium between polarities, the resolution of harshness (yang) into sweetness (yin). By sealing with this symbol pressed into the liquid, the practitioner is not just encasing the liquid energetically but embedding a template of balance into its structure.

What Does the Taste Difference Demonstrate About Chi's Physical Effect?

Peng concludes the demonstration by inviting taste comparison. The student drinks from the treated glass and then tastes the untreated control glass, which Peng describes as "horrible" in contrast. This direct sensory confirmation is the proof of the practice. If the energy work had no effect, both glasses would taste identical.

The taste difference suggests that chi, when projected with intention and sealed through precise techniques, does alter the molecular or energetic structure of matter. In Western scientific terms, this would be difficult to measure; in Qigong theory, it is understood as the chi having reorganized the subtle energy patterns of the liquid, which then manifests as observable changes in taste, texture, and potentially healing properties.

What Are the Core Principles Behind This Qigong Practice?

Several foundational ideas emerge from this demonstration:

  • Chi is directional and responsive to will: Energy is not abstract or ambient; it flows where intention guides it, and hand position focuses its movement.
  • Substances have energetic properties that can be shifted: Matter is not inert. Liquids, foods, and other substances carry energetic signatures that practitioners can modify through chi work.
  • Specific techniques carry precise functions: Open hands establish flow, sword fingers stir and evaporate, seals anchor transformation. Each gesture is a tool with a defined energetic purpose.
  • Intention and visualization are active forces: The imagination is not mere fantasy; it is the mechanism by which chi is directed. Visualizing sweetness actually transfers that quality.
  • Sealing prevents dispersion: Work must be sealed or the effects dissipate. The yin-yang represents the final state the practitioner wishes to establish.

Where to Go From Here

This three-minute practice is an entry point into broader Qigong applications. Practitioners who master this technique with liquids can extend the same principles to food (infusing intention into meals), water (creating energetically enhanced drinking water), and ultimately to direct chi work with the human body. Peng teaches this as foundational because the visible, testable change in taste provides immediate feedback that chi work is real and teachable.

For those interested in deeper study, Peng's book The Master Key: Qigong Secrets for Vitality, Love, and Wisdom explores the theoretical framework underlying these practices. Regular training in basic Qigong cultivation—standing postures, breathing methods, and meridian work—builds the capacity to generate and direct chi with greater power and precision. This brandy practice is a capstone demonstration that reveals what becomes possible when years of chi cultivation are applied with specific intent.

According to Qigong theory, yes—chi responds to intention and can reorganize the energetic structure of matter. The video demonstrates a direct taste comparison: the treated glass tastes visibly different (sweeter, softer) than the untreated control, providing sensory proof that the technique produces measurable change.
The sword finger is a hand configuration where all fingers extend and align to create concentrated chi beams. In this practice, it stirs the transformed energy throughout the liquid and 'evaporates' unwanted harsh qualities, functioning as both a mixing and purification tool.
Sealing anchors the energetic transformation so it doesn't disperse. Peng uses sword finger pressed with a yin-yang diagram, sealed nine times on the liquid's surface, to lock the new energetic state in place and prevent reversion to the original quality.
Place one hand above and one below the glass, creating a sandwich around it. The upper hand visualizes and projects chi into the liquid while you simultaneously hold clear intention—for example, visualizing sweetness flowing in and harshness flushing away.
Yes. The same principles apply to food, water, oils, and other liquids. The brandy demonstration is used because the taste difference is obvious and immediate, but Qigong practitioners extend these techniques to whatever substances they wish to infuse with healing or beneficial intention.
The yin-yang represents balance and the integration of opposites—in this case, the resolution of harshness (yang) into sweetness (yin). Pressing this symbol into the liquid embeds a template of balance into the substance's structure, finalizing the transformation.
