Three Priorities for Living inHarmony During Uncertain Times

Don Miguel Ruiz presents a three-tiered framework of priorities for navigating uncertain times: first, honoring your physical body as your home and sacred vessel; second, nurturing relationships with those closest to you—family, loved ones, community; and third, engaging in meaningful work and service that allows you to contribute your gifts to the world. This hierarchy creates a foundation for living in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings, rooted in self-respect, justice, and a circulation of gratitude and generosity.

Why Your Physical Body Is Your First Priority

Don Miguel Ruiz begins with a foundational truth that most people overlook: your physical body is not merely an instrument of convenience—it is your home. "We live in our physical body our physical body is our home we live there and we should see our physical body like something sacred where we live" (0:51). This is not poetic language but a practical restatement of priority.

We often honor external structures—churches, schools, institutions—with reverence and care, yet we abuse or neglect the one place we truly inhabit every moment of our existence. The body is where our consciousness expresses itself, where our will manifests, and where we interface with the physical world. Without a functioning physical body, you cannot communicate your needs, cannot ask for what you require, and cannot receive or give anything.

Ruiz emphasizes that the body continues to serve us whether we pay attention to it or not. There is a distinction between the body itself and what he calls "the main character of the story that we create"—our sense of identity, our beliefs about who we are. The body functions, but the conscious awareness that pilots it—what we believe ourselves to be—can either cooperate with or work against the body's needs. Honoring the body as sacred means recognizing that without it, nothing else in your life is possible.

How Relationships Form Your Second Layer of Priority

Once the foundation of physical care is established, the second priority emerges naturally: the people closest to you. "A second priority will be the people that are close to us the one we love the most like our children our beloved our parents our brothers sisters our family our community our friends our country" (2:51).

This is not a hierarchy that diminishes others, but rather a realistic acknowledgment of where your influence and responsibility are most concentrated. You cannot serve a distant abstraction if you cannot first respect and care for those in your immediate circle. The logic is reciprocal: the people closest to you are the ones with whom you interact most directly, to whom you communicate your needs and they communicate theirs to you.

Ruiz insists that "it's important to love ourselves and to respect ourselves because when we respect we can respect every everything and everybody around us" (3:32). This is not selfishness—it is the foundation of authentic generosity. You cannot give what you do not have. If you harbor no respect for yourself, respect extended to others becomes a hollow performance. True respect for others flows from genuine self-respect, and this radiates outward to family, community, and country.

What Does Meaningful Work and Service Mean as Your Third Priority?

The third priority is your work—not merely employment for survival, but the conscious engagement with what you create, offer, and contribute. "A third priority will be what we do for living our job our creation our business our hobbies the way we interact and give sharing with the rest of the world what we have inside our knowledge our love" (4:59).

This encompasses far more than a job title. It includes how you show up in your field, the quality of attention you bring to your work, and the intention with which you serve. Ruiz illustrates this through his own transformation: he was a physician for many years, dedicating himself to healing people. But he discovered another way to serve—through teaching and writing. This shift was not a retreat from contribution; it was a recalibration toward where his gifts could have the greatest impact.

The principle at work here is justice with yourself. "It's important that we have justice with ourselves and not to repress ourselves not to abuse ourselves we if we have justice with ourselves we can see justice outside ourselves also" (5:42). When you honor your own talents and creative impulses rather than suppressing them, you develop the capacity to recognize and support justice in the wider world. You stop accepting abuse and mistreatment, and this internal standard becomes visible in how you navigate society.

How Does Love Connect Gratitude and Generosity?

Ruiz offers a distinctive definition of love that bridges the individual and the collective: "Love is the illusion between gratitude and generosity." (7:48). This is not sentimental but transactional in the most profound sense.

When you receive from life—whether through your workplace, through another person, or through circumstances—that receipt triggers gratitude. Genuine gratitude naturally generates the impulse to give more, to share, to teach. Those who receive your generosity, in turn, feel gratitude and are moved to give more themselves. The system becomes self-amplifying: "as more we give more we receive as more we receive more we give" (8:23).

This is how the individual life rises in love and becomes a force for evolution in society. It is not about grand gestures or universal missions—it is about the humble circulation of gift and gratitude through your sphere of influence.

How Can You Serve Humanity With What You Actually Have?

Ruiz illustrates this principle through his own arc. As a physician, he learned that medicine was one form of service. Later, he recognized that teaching offered a broader reach. Then books became his medium: "I create books and we can say that a book is dead until someone take the book and read the book as somebody read the book they perceive the book in their own way and that may transform what they believe about themselves and about everybody around" (9:22).

A book is inert until it is received and interpreted by a reader. That reader gives it life. The same applies to any form of service: it is only activated when someone receives it, believes it, and acts upon it. This does not depend on your certainty that your work will "help" in measurable ways. "It's important if they like or not the book if that book will help them or not everybody have the right to believe or not to believe" (10:22). Your responsibility is only to offer your best, your truth, your knowledge. What others do with it is their choice.

The final call is direct: "You cannot give what you don't have but you can give what you have" (11:00). You do not need permission, credentials, or ideal circumstances to serve. You serve from where you stand, with what you possess, to those within your reach.

Where to Go from Here

The framework Ruiz presents is both simple and demanding. It asks you to examine whether you are honoring your body as sacred, whether you are showing up fully in your closest relationships, whether your work reflects your values and gifts, and whether you are creating a circulation of gratitude and generosity rather than hoarding or depleting.

The practical next step is reflection: What are you actually doing to live in harmony with your surroundings? Are your daily choices aligned with these three priorities, or are you scattered among external demands that do not reflect what matters most? And what do you have to offer—not someday when conditions are perfect, but now, with what you possess?

[0:11] hello my friends

[0:13] it's a pleasure and an honor to be

[0:16] with all of you

[0:19] you know we are living in a very

[0:20] interesting times

[0:24] history is happening and we are weakness

[0:29] what is happening all around us

[0:34] there's many things that we can do many

[0:37] many things that we shouldn't do

[0:40] but is the right time to really see our

[0:43] priorities

[0:47] to really understand

[0:51] that the first priority for all of us

[0:55] is our own physical body

[1:00] it is because we live in our physical

[1:02] body

[1:03] our physical body is our home

[1:07] we live there

[1:10] and we should see our physical body

[1:15] like something sacred where we live

[1:18] like we honor more than any church any

[1:21] school

[1:22] we live in our physical body

[1:26] we are the force that moves the physical

[1:29] body we are life

[1:31] and the physical body will do whatever

[1:34] we want to

[1:35] for the things that we believe we can

[1:37] control

[1:38] because even if we don't want to the

[1:41] physical body

[1:42] will keep working

[1:45] with or without us and when i say

[1:48] us i talking about that main character

[1:52] of the story that we create which means

[1:56] what we believe we are

[1:59] i think is very important

[2:02] that we can see our body after

[2:06] love of our life the most important for

[2:09] us

[2:09] because without the physical body we

[2:11] cannot communicate with anything

[2:14] we cannot ask for what we need we cannot

[2:17] give

[2:20] you see is so important then our

[2:23] physical body

[2:24] really is our first priority

[2:29] it's like our home where we live or

[2:32] house

[2:33] we live in that house live

[2:37] in our society we live in a city

[2:40] we live in a state we live in a country

[2:42] we live in the planet earth

[2:44] and all of that is our home

[2:51] a second priority

[2:54] will be the people that are close to us

[2:58] the one we love the most like

[3:01] our children our beloved

[3:04] our parents our brothers sisters

[3:07] our family our community our friends

[3:12] our country

[3:17] that is very important because this with

[3:19] the one we will communicate

[3:22] with the ones we will interact

[3:25] as for what we need and give what they

[3:28] need

[3:31] it's important to love ourselves and to

[3:34] respect ourselves

[3:38] because when we respect we can respect

[3:40] every everything

[3:41] and everybody around us

[3:45] we cannot forgive what we don't have

[3:50] then a third priority will be

[3:53] what we do for living

[3:57] our job our creation

[4:00] our business our hobbies

[4:04] the way we interact and give

[4:07] sharing with the rest of the world what

[4:10] we have inside

[4:12] our knowledge our love

[4:17] it's important that we have justice with

[4:20] ourselves

[4:24] and not to repress ourselves not to

[4:27] abuse ourselves

[4:32] we if we have justice with ourselves we

[4:35] can see

[4:36] justice outside ourselves also

[4:41] and great witness all around the world

[4:44] the lack of justice is that personal

[4:48] is the way it is

[4:53] how we contribute with our society

[4:58] when we contribute with society doing

[5:00] the best we have

[5:02] in each one of us have a different way

[5:04] to share to give

[5:06] it's important to love our society

[5:10] as we love our family as we love our

[5:13] beloved

[5:14] our children as we love ourselves

[5:20] we can say that love

[5:23] is take illusion between gratitude

[5:27] and generosity when we receive

[5:31] from life that we receive

[5:34] from the place we work where we receive

[5:38] from whoever that trigger

[5:42] gratitude in ourselves

[5:45] and with that gratitude we may give even

[5:48] more that's what we receive and then we

[5:52] give

[5:52] we share we teach

[5:57] the result of that is that the ones who

[6:00] receive from us

[6:03] will trigger the gratitude also and they

[6:06] will keep even more

[6:09] then as more we give more we receive

[6:13] as more we receive more we give

[6:17] and if you understand what i'm sharing

[6:18] with you right now we

[6:20] rise in love and that's how we

[6:24] contribute

[6:25] with our society with humanity

[6:28] by doing the best that we have

[6:34] like in my case for a long time

[6:39] i used to be a medical doctor

[6:42] and i tried to heal people to give the

[6:45] best

[6:46] to help these people to get better

[6:50] in a certain point i decide not to be a

[6:52] medical doctor anymore

[6:56] but i find that another way to give to

[6:58] serve

[7:02] and that's when i start teaching

[7:05] what i know as a result of that

[7:09] many people have the benefit

[7:13] for my teachings and they start

[7:15] practicing

[7:16] and many other teachers come from there

[7:18] and i start teaching all around

[7:22] but then i write

[7:25] i write books and that's the way that i

[7:28] can share

[7:30] what i feel what i know with everybody

[7:34] who want to read

[7:38] i create books and we can say

[7:44] that a book is dead until

[7:48] someone take the book and read the book

[7:52] as somebody read the book

[7:56] they perceive the book in their own way

[8:00] and that may transform what they believe

[8:04] about themselves

[8:06] and about everybody around

[8:12] we give life to what we

[8:15] read once we finish the book is

[8:19] dead again until somebody else

[8:23] get the book and give life of what we

[8:27] give of what we share

[8:29] then that is the way that i

[8:34] contribute for the evolution

[8:38] of my beloved humanity

[8:42] is that important if they like or not

[8:45] the book

[8:46] if that book will help them or not

[8:49] everybody

[8:50] have the right to believe or not to

[8:53] believe

[8:55] but they can create and give even more

[8:58] then this is what we are doing right now

[9:01] that's our way to

[9:02] serve respecting

[9:05] all the beliefs all the religions

[9:09] respecting everything respecting

[9:12] you now the question will be for you

[9:18] how are you gonna serve

[9:21] humanity but you're gonna serve

[9:25] the ones who need perhaps your help

[9:29] you cannot give what you don't have

[9:32] but you can give what you have

[9:37] i'm so grateful that you decide to hear

[9:40] my words

[9:42] and please share

[9:45] with somebody else what you believe is

[9:48] true for you

[9:49] you have all my love and

[9:53] see you next time

[10:07] you

He means recognizing your body as the actual home where you live—not metaphorically, but literally where your consciousness resides and through which you interact with the world. Just as you honor external buildings like churches and schools, you should treat your body with that same reverence, because without it you cannot communicate, ask for what you need, or give anything.
After honoring your physical body, your second priority is the people closest to you—family, loved ones, and community with whom you interact most directly. Your third is meaningful work or service where you contribute your gifts. The key is that these three flow outward in concentric circles: you cannot authentically serve the wider world if you neglect those nearest to you.
According to Ruiz, you cannot genuinely give what you do not have. If you have no self-respect, respect extended to others becomes hollow performance. When you practice justice and respect with yourself—not repressing or abusing yourself—you develop the internal standard that allows you to recognize and respect justice in others and in society.
Love is the dynamic circulation between receiving (which generates gratitude) and giving (which flows from that gratitude). When you receive from life and feel grateful, that gratitude naturally generates the desire to give more. Those who receive from you feel gratitude and give more in return, creating an amplifying cycle: as more we give, more we receive.
No. You serve with what you have, from where you stand, to those within your reach. Ruiz illustrates this: he shifted from being a physician to teaching to writing, but each form was valid service. You do not need to control whether others believe you, benefit, or act on what you offer—you only offer your best.
Ruiz suggests returning to this three-tiered framework: first, ensure your physical body is cared for (it is your home). Second, invest in those closest to you. Third, do meaningful work aligned with your values. When these three are honored, you naturally rise in love and contribute to your society's evolution, even amid uncertainty.
